The image shows mitochondrial networks in yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) grown in different carbon sources and mixed before imaging. Lactate-grown cells (oxidized state) exhibit fragmented mitochondria, while ethanol-grown cells (reduced state) display tubular networks. This study reveals that cellular redox state actively regulates mitochondrial organization, independent of mitochondrial activity.
